Day Four - In Dependence
Zechariah 4:6-7 (NLT) - "Then he said to me, 'This is what the LORD says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of Heaven's Armies. Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel's way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: 'May God bless it! May God bless it!'"
BREAKING NEWS: "There has been a levee breach as a result of the powerful hurricane ripped through the city. Most of the city is now underwater and many lives have perished as a result..."
This news brief sounds all too familiar to us today given the frequency of natural disasters. A levee is purposefully designed to provide protection to the land and livelihood of those who live near bodies of water and on the commonly expected paths of hurricanes. Many people have built their homes and lives in these areas trusting in the strength of these man-made structures to save them from the dangers of flooding. When these levees failed, many lives were changed in an instant as they saw their earthly possessions destroyed and realized they had nothing left.
As Christians, we also tend to grow comfortable in our ways and as long as there is no crisis in our lives, our guards slowly come down and we begin to trust in our own ability to accomplish things. In the midst of this seeming comfort, sometimes we experience a rude awakening that everything is not as it should be. In Zechariah, it is clear that anything of lasting value can be accomplished only through God's Spirit, not by our own strength. God gives us the assurance that nothing will stand in our way when He accomplishes His plan through us.
Responding to the Transmitted Message: Is your heart unsettled? Are you experiencing a crisis moment in your life? Let's come to God by putting our trust in Him. Let's declare and acknowledge that it is by the Lord's strength and not our own that will accomplish His plans. Let's live in full dependence of His Spirit!
