Day Four - Pre-womb?

Jeremiah 1:5-8 (TNIV) - "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

"Ah, Sovereign LORD," I said, "I do not know how to speak; I am too young."

But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am too young.' You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you," declares the LORD.

When a couple finds out they are pregnant, they embark on nine months of waiting as they wonder what their child will look like. But technology has stepped in and has cut down on much of that waiting time. At two months, most parents get a sneak peek of how their baby looks. But it may as well be a stock photo because they all look alike - kidney-beanish with a little bit of chicken. That's not a side dish, it's kind of what a two month old fetus looks like. But that doesn't matter to the parents. As they are seeing their child for the first time they feel the deeper realization of "I know you because I know what you look like."

Having an ultrasound is the best human beings can do to "know" their child before they are born. As we read in today's passage, God tells Jeremiah that He knew him not just before he was born, but even before He was in the womb. Now there's no technology for that! Only God has this sneak peek and it wasn't just into what we would look like, but also who we would be and what we would do. God tells Jeremiah that he would be a prophet to the nations. No wonder Jeremiah responds with hesitation, "I do not know how to speak; I am too young." But God calls Jeremiah into trust, "I am with you."

God's picky love was there pre-womb, pre-birth. It was a love that rescued us, but it is also a love that is with us. In that love, we can have deeper trust to live out God's calling in our lives.

Responding to the Transmitted Message: We believe God's Word today. He knows us, sets us apart, appoints us. Let us go to everyone He sends us to and say whatever He commands us to. Pray today for divine appointments to share the wonder of God's picky love with someone else for "I AM (is) with us."
